Harlem Children’s Zone

Commissioned cover illustration for a feature length Q&A with Bowdoin alumnus Geoffrey Canada, president of the Harlem Children’s Zone.

Ten years ago, when I had about fifty kids in college, if you asked a kid growing up in Harlem, “Do you know anybody going to college?” they would probably say, “I think there’s a girl on 120th Street, but she is so smart.” And you say “Well, you could.” “No, no.” they say, “You have to be brilliant to go to college. No one goes.”…Today we have 954 kids in college. – G.C.
